Managing your personal brand: O+B at Pro-Am day

Internships. What used to be icing on the cake on a college student’s resume now is an essential ingredient.  In fact, it’s not uncommon for young adults to have (and for employers to expect) multiple internships under their belt before landing their first post-graduate job. In addition to its strong and competitive summer internship program, Osborn Barr actively supports and participants in programs that grow and nurture the area’s next generation of agri-marketing and communications professionals.

Spooner (left) speaking on the Young Professionals panel at the Public Relations Society of America Pro-Am day hosted by St. Louis University.

I was honored to represent O+B on the Young Professionals panel at the Public Relations Society of America Pro-Am day hosted by St. Louis University on March 23. I shared personal insights into making the transition from college to a full-time job. As a May 2011 graduate, it wasn’t that long ago that I was on the receiving end of these sessions; however, what a difference a year can make! As Keynote speaker, Carrie Muehlemann with The Creative Group pointed out, managing your personal brand is a top priority in this day and age. With the amount of social media channels, prospective employers can easily form an opinion of you before ever reading your resume. 72 percent of PR executives said they’re likely to look up a new hire prospect online before an interview.

Even professionals who are comfortable in their current position still need to successfully manage their own brand. Muehlemann shared the following tips to polish your brand:

  • Demonstrate that you can successfully manage your own brand through your resume, business cards and social media pages
  • Search yourself on Google and YouTube, and make sure your personal brand appears how you want people to see you
  • Stay relevant by choosing one online platform to join in on the conversation, whether it be Twitter, LinkedIn or Google+

Your digital footprint describes who you are as a person. Establish personality, interests and core attributes through social media to enhance your credibility. While interns are polishing their resume, the rest of us should be right alongside them managing and polishing our own brand.

Ries Celebrates 20 Years with Osborn Barr

Every company has story.  A startup story, highs, lows, etc.  And there are people that were there past and present that make up the cast.   At 24 years, we’re a relatively young company.  And we’re thankful that we still have one of our founders here to continue our growth (thanks, Steve!). But right there behind Steve in terms of credit for the success of O+B is Rhonda Ries.  She’s been here since darn near the beginning and judiciously managed the company’s finances and now many operational elements.

A blog post cannot do justice to the contribution, service and commitment that Rhonda has exhibited the past 20 years while she’s earnestly represented the best interests of O+B.  But perhaps all of you can join Steve and I in saying thanks to her for  all she’s done.  Way back when, good times and bad, and here going forward.

Happy anniversary, Rhonda!!

O+B Salutes USB’s John Becherer as Agribusiness Leader of the Year

United Soybean Board CEO John Becherer addresses agribusiness professionals after receiving the Agribusiness Leader of the Year award at the National Agri-Marketing Association’s annual conference opening general session on Thursday, April 19, 2012. USB’s most recent survey of U.S. soybean farmers shows 75 percent support the soy checkoff.

Increase the profit potential of more than 500,000 farmers. Grow demand for your product by more than 150 percent. Meet the needs of nearly 70 different clients. Help restructure your organization to better meet the needs of your customers in the future.

All of those accomplishments can be claimed by John Becherer, who serves as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the United Soybean Board (USB), the organization that carries out the national soybean checkoff. The National AgriMarketing Association (NAMA) honored John Wednesday with its “Agribusiness Leader of the Year” award.  The recognition salutes outstanding leaders in agribusiness, education, government service or other agribusiness-related areas who exemplify excellence in agribusiness by their significant contributions to the industry.

O+B has been privileged to work for John during most of his tenure at USB, serving as the organization’s communications primary contractor. That’s the technical jargon. What we’ve done and continue to do is to proudly serve as an integral part of John’s USB team. We believe his accomplishments and leadership merit the award and are proud NAMA agreed with O+B’s recommendation to honor him.

USB staff took part in the National Agri-Marketing Association’s annual conference general session to salute their leader, CEO John Becherer (front row, center). They include (front row, l to r) Lisa O’Brien, USB executive director; Becherer, Mary Hahn, executive assistant, and (back row, l to r) Brenda Malottke, director of finance, Mike Heyer, accounting manager, Shelly Reinagel, program manager, and Maria Bingaman, internal communications manager. O+B serves as USB’s primary communications contractor.

U.S. Department of Agriculture figures show more than half a million Americans grow soybeans. Over the last two decades, demand for soybeans has outpaced that of any other major U.S. row crop. The organization positioned the industry for the future by creating a new strategic plan last summer. Its farmer-directors recently restructured the national soy checkoff to align with the plan’s objectives in order to continue to provide profit opportunities for all U.S. soybean farmers.

Sixty-nine different U.S. soybean farmers from 31 states and regions help select and oversee more than 200 companies, scientists and marketers that make up the USB orchestra with John serving as its conductor nearly 18 out of its 20 years. O+B congratulates John Becherer on making great music for U.S. soybean farmers and the entire U.S. soy industry. We look forward to creating more hits with him, his staff and USB farmer-directors in the years to come.

O+B PR Strikes Gold at 2012 Golden ARC Awards

What a night! Two individuals who have been instrumental in paving the way for agricultural communications were inducted into the newly formed Agricultural Relations Council Hall of Fame, and a nice chunk of our work was recognized by our peers during the 2012 Golden ARC Awards, held March 23 in Charleston, SC. ARC was formed almost 60 years ago, and is the only association dedicated to serving the unique needs of public relations professionals working in agriculture, food, fiber and other related industries. The Golden ARC Awards has come to represent the pinnacle of success in agricultural public relations.

The Golden ARC Awards are judged by impartial third parties. This year, entries were judged by the Turf and Ornamental Communicators Association (TOCA). From the 16 Golden ARCs (first place) and 21 merits that were awarded, Osborn Barr took home five Golden ARC and eight merit awards.

Congratulations go out to the many people involved in these winning projects, including our clients, Livestock Improvement Corporation (LIC), Merck Animal Health, SFP, Monsanto, and Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame.
